Last night we had another great family night here at the church. I always enjoy family night – there is nothing better for me than good fellowship and good food (for those who have seen me eat, I’m sure you’ll amen my love for food). Despite my love for good food, however, family night is not primarily about the meal. Family night is about us being the family of God and doing the things that the family of God does.
I appreciate the reminder that Pastor Steven gives us each family night – that in our conversations together as a church family around the table, we should not just talk about the weather or our favorite sports team or the politics of the day, but we should be talking about the things of God. The conversation doesn’t have to be forced, but it may takeus making an effort to get outside of “comfortable conversation.”
I wanted to end this post by listing a couple of verses that highlight our call to be involved in one another’s lives as Christian brothers and sisters. Think about these commands when you talk with those in the Poplar Spring church family.
Romans 10:10 - Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
Romans 10:16 - Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.
1 Corinthians 12:24 - But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 - Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
Hebrews 10:23 - Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
