God Sent His One and Only Son to Die for Us

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son . . .  John 3:16

Review:

1.      God is Our Creator

·         This means I am responsible to Him

2.      I am a Sinner

·         This means I stand condemned

3.      God Sent His Son to die in my place

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.   Ephesians 1:7

REDEMPTION THROUGH THE SON PROPHESIZED

·         In the Garden of Eden  – Genesis 3:15-21

·         In the OT Sacrificial System – Hebrews 9:11-15

REDEMPTION THROUGH THE SON PROVIDED

·         Romans 3:21-26

·         In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  1 John 4:10

·         You were ransomed not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.   1 Peter 1:18-19

REDEMPTION THROUGH THE SON PROCLAIMED

·         Isaiah 61:1-3

·          And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.   1 Cor 2:1-5

O What A Savior!

Isaiah 53:3-12

3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?

9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

New Blog – “Be Careful How You Hear”

September 19, 2008 · 2 Comments

Our own Matt Emerson has started his own blog, Be Careful How You Hear. I’ve added his blog to the “Blogs of Interest” links on the right side of this page, and would encourage you to check it out!

Here’s a quote from his first post on September 15th where he gives something of a purpose statement for his blog.

“Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” -Luke 8:18

This blog is dedicated to exploring the area of listening as an act of worship in a believer’s life, and specifically listening to the Word of God in the preaching event. Hopefully it will edify both myself and anyone who happens to read to listen to the Word with an ear to hear and a hope to be transformed into the image of Christ.

Article in the Washington Post on persecution of Christians

September 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We in America often forget how blessed we are to live in a country where we do not face major persecution for our faith. This article in the Washington Post reminded me that God calls us in the book of Hebrews to Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.”

On Wednesday nights, as well as this past Sunday morning, we have been talking about how we are to articulate the gospel. Here’s a helpful video from Dr. Mark Dever (who is pastor of one of our sister SBC churches in Washington D.C. – Capitol Hill Baptist Church) giving his 2 minute presentation of the gospel.

The Book of Ephesians – Introductory Notes

September 2, 2008 · 1 Comment

As you know, pastor Steven began a new sermon series on Sunday morning. He will be preaching through the book of Ephesians. Today I wanted to post a link to a PDF file that contains the introduction to the book of Ephesians found in the ESV Study Bible. CLICK HERE!

This introductory material was written by Steven M. Baugh; he does a great job of giving a brief overview of the book. Especially interesting is the information given on the city of Ephesus.

You can read an interview with Dr. Baugh about his work on Ephesians for the ESV Study Bible here.
